BEHIND THE INDEX
A box-score performance rate scaled to 48 minutes. It is a linear projection, not a prediction of actual full-game production.
The default view requires over 10 average minutes and at least 20 games. When fewer games are available, the game minimum adapts to the available maximum; the minutes minimum is relaxed only if no players qualify. Change or reset the filters to include more players. Recent-games mode uses every season and competition for both the player pool and scoring. Season mode uses all qualifying games in the selected season and competition. Games-played eligibility counts qualifying appearances in the scoring scope before the latest-game limit. By default, indexes, minutes and box-score averages use each player’s latest 20 recorded appearances across all seasons and competitions. The calculation panel can change the sample size, restrict scoring to the selected season and competition, or exclude appearances below a per-game minutes threshold. Average minutes is a separate eligibility filter. Players with fewer appearances use the available sample. Each appearance counts equally.
How Watch Score works
An experimental 0–100 highlights rating: late-game tension (35%), competitiveness (25%), standout performances (25%), and comeback (15%).
Late-game tension measures time within six points during the final five minutes (70%), up to two lead changes in the final minute (20%), and overtime (10%). Competitiveness measures time within six points across the game (70%) and up to twelve lead changes (30%). Ties do not count as lead changes.
Standout performances combine the two highest actual game contributions, weighted 70% and 30%. Actual contribution = Overall Per48 × minutes ÷ 48. This is compared with up to 2,000 earlier games in the same competition; the 80th–100th percentile maps to 0–100. At least twenty reference games are required.
Comeback measures the eventual winner’s largest deficit, or a deficit recovered by the losing team when the final margin is six points or less; a twenty-point recovery scores 100. Incomplete play-by-play receives no rating. A final-score shortfall of up to three points can receive an approximate rating when the winner is unchanged and the conservative Watch Score range spans at most fifteen points. The range considers possible timing and separate missing points; the displayed estimate is its midpoint. Larger or uncertain discrepancies remain unrated. This formula is a first version, not a validated prediction of enjoyment.

Sources and calculation.
Data via SportsDataverse, using its ESPN NBA feed. Missing historical box scores are filled from official NBA.com tables and NBA statistics archives. Minutes retain the precision reported by each source. Foul splits use ESPN play-by-play and verified historical NBA play-by-play archives. Alternate records must match the game, player and total personal fouls. Loose-ball, flagrant and double-personal foul sides use recorded NBA possession or clear ESPN possession events: rebounds, turnovers and made baskets. These are contextual assignments, not official foul subtypes. Unclassified personal fouls count as defensive for this index and are disclosed; source classifications remain unchanged. Preseason, regular season, playoffs, play-in and NBA Cup finals are kept separate. All-Star exhibitions are excluded.
Completed games through the last successful check. Hourly update target (Europe/Istanbul).
This custom box-score index does not capture every defensive contribution or team impact. It is not an official NBA statistic.
